This week we chat to Leona from Wandermust Family about her favourite family holiday in Asia – Tokyo, Japan
I keep hearing from other family travellers how fantastically family-friendly Japan is for kids. We are yet to go, but desperate to visit! With living in India, I’m certainly drawn to some easier family travel in Asia and I love how distinct the Japanese culture seems.
1. Tell us a bit about yourselves. Where are you from and how often do you travel as a family? How old are your children?
We are the Wandermust Family, consisting of Mummy, Daddy and the Wandermust Toddler. Until recently we lived in Qatar but have now returned to the UK. We have a love of luxury travel and love exploring the world with our little one (aged 1).
2. How many times have you travelled to Asia and why do you love travelling there?
As a couple, we have travelled through Asia extensively but have only recently taken our little one for her first trip to Asia where we went to Japan and South Korea.
3. Why is Tokyo your favourite destination?
There are so many places in Tokyo that it is really difficult to pick a favourite, but if I had to, I would say the grounds of the Imperial Palace. The grounds are really extensive and they are a great place to run around with kids.
4. What were your top 3 activities for kids in Tokyo?
Despite what people may think, Tokyo is an amazingly family friendly place to go. There are many gardens and shrines which are great places for children to explore. Of all the gardens Hamarikyu Gardens were our favourites. We also loved exploring the grounds of the Imperial Palace. But perhaps the most family friendly or at least child favourite place is likely to be Disney or Disney Sea.
5. Where did you stay and do you recommend it?
We stayed at the Conrad Tokyo. This is a high end brand and is worth every penny. We loved all of the family friendly touches provided in room from childrens slippers and toiletries to teddy bears and rubber ducks for the little one.
6. What did your little one eat?
Food was perhaps my biggest concern about travelling to Japan with a toddler but I shouldn’t have worried. The toddler LOVED Japanese food especially tonkatsu and rice. If you have a fussy toddler you will find plenty of Western choices especially Italian food.
7. How did you get around?
Tokyo is an easy city to walk around but we also used the underground, taxis, train and bullet train while in Japan. All were very easy to navigate and doable with a toddler.
8. What is your top tip for families travelling to Tokyo?
My top tip for families thinking about going to Tokyo is just do it. There is really something for everyone.
9. What item could you not have done without in Tokyo?
The item I couldn’t do without was our Familidoo collapsible stroller. Space is tight in Japan so it is useful to have a compact stroller for when you are travelling around the city.
10. Where are you off to next?
Our next big trip is our round the world adventure. This includes Hong Kong and Beijing for our Asia destinations.
Where would we be without our trusted Lonely Planet?
