Microscooters REVIEW: scooters instead of bikes for a family road trip

The stabilisers had come off our youngest’s bike just a month before his fourth birthday. I was so excited. We could now start doing proper cycling trips as a family and I had grand plans of taking the bikes on our summer road trip around France.

Microscooters gifted the whole family scooters in return for coverage on social media and this review. As always, these are all my own words and opinions.

We then started looking at bike racks. This trip was before we bought our Mazda Bongo and fitted the Thule bike rack, we didn’t have a tow bar on our car, didn’t want to spend too much money, and we have four bikes. Surely loads of families are in the same boat as us, but we could not fathom why it was so difficult to find a bike rack solution that wasn’t going to cost a fortune.

The bike rack saga

But the only solution we could find for our car was a rear-mounted strap system. This would have been annoying to remove each time we needed to get into the boot and we weren’t comfortable driving such long distances along the French motorways at 130 km/h with all four bikes only secured by simple straps. There was also the issue of our number plates and lights being blocked by the bikes. …. It was all getting rather complicated.

Discussions then started as to how much we would even use the bikes on our road trip. I wasn’t yet comfortable with the boys cycling on a road, so it would only be for actual designated cycle tracks and around campsites.

Or perhaps there’s an alternative…

And that’s when we wondered whether scooters were the way forward.

Microscooters had been in touch with us and gifted us one of their scooters each in return for a Microscooters review and coverage on our social media. Yes, us parents got scooters too!

These scooters fold in half, to minimise space and are built with Swiss engineering. And the best bit? We could fit the scooters in the footwell of our car, amongst all the camping gear for our France road trip. Much less bulky than bikes!

The boys each got a Micro Cruiser in red, which they had personalised with their names. This is suitable for ages 5-10, so should last them a while! I got the Flex Classic (lightweight for carrying, suitable for short hop on hop off journeys), and Jay got the Micro Suspension Scooter (with front and rear suspension, and a longer deck suitable for those with bigger feet).

All scooters have an inbuilt stand and adjustable handlebars, and feel like they’re built to last. Plus the boys got some nifty accessories including helmets, bells and water bottle holders.

These scooters proved to be absolutely fantastic on our summer road trip, and the boys soon got to grips with the back-wheel break whilst zooming along. They spent hours scootering around campsites on them; Camping Gavin in Spain and Les Alicourts in France was particularly good for it! We also put them in the boot of the car for day trips in case we found a good place to scooter, which we always did. Although we found tarmac paths worked much better with the scooters than gravel paths.

And did you know you can even take microscooters on planes as hand luggage? That’s exactly what our friends at Dais Like These did on their trip to New York. Not only did this make the long airport walks much easier, but also made getting around New York with kids much more manageable.

Admittedly you can’t go as fast or as far on a scooter compared to a bike and we still love our long bike rides at home in the Peak District. But with our boys aged 4 and 5, the scooters worked brilliantly for our summer road trip and we’ll now be taking them on flights for our European city trips.
