Nichola from Globalmouse Travels chats about her favourite holiday destination in Asia for family travel – Borneo. Have you considered Borneo with kids?
We travelled there pre-kids and seeing orangutans in the wild and climbing Mt Kinabalu were big highlights! We would love to take the boys back there, although we may have to wait a few years before we take on Mt Kinabalu – my knees still twinge at the thought of all those steps!
So let’s hear from Nichola why Borneo is so fantastic for kids…
1. Tell us a bit about yourselves. Where are you from and how often do you travel as a family? How old are your children?
We are from Bath in the UK and our children are 10, 8 and 5. We travel as often as we can – every school holiday and many weekends too.
2. How many times have you travelled to Asia and why do you love travelling there?
We’ve been to Asia numerous times before kids and three times now with the kids. We love travelling in Asia as the food is so imaginative and fun and something we all love and we just find the people to be the friendliest in the world.
3. Why is Borneo your favourite destination?
I love Borneo as it really feels off the beaten track. The wildlife is stunning and for every member of our family, no matter what the age, it is awe-inspiring. We also think the people in Borneo are some of the friendliest ever.
4. What were your top 3 things to do in Borneo with kids?
Taking a tour with a guide through the Bako National Park, paddling in the bath water warm South China Sea and eating spicy noodles in Kuching.
5. Where did you stay and do you recommend it?
We stayed in The Permai Rainforest Lodge which was quite rustic but with the basics to make us feel comfortable. It was set deep in the rainforest which was a really fun experience, waking up to the sounds of the creatures.
6. What did the kids eat?
Noodles and lots of rice.
7. How did you get around Borneo with kids?
We got taxis and also boats around.
8. What is your top tip for travelling to Borneo with kids?
Hire a guide. They are so inexpensive and worth their value many, many times over. Having them point out snakes and explain that they were (or weren’t) poisonous, explaining about the animals we came across in an educated way meant we got so much more from the experience than if we just wandered around by ourselves.
9. What item could you not have done without in Borneo?
Closed toe shoes. You have to scramble over tree roots and muddy banks and with a three year old (at the time) in tow we all needed to have a go at getting up and down the terrain so decent footwear was a must.
10. Where are you off to next?
We aren’t 100% sure – we’re always on the lookout for the next adventure and waiting to see where we will end up but we have our sights set on more of the Middle East and back to Asia too.
